Kansas City is known as the “City of Fountains” because there are more than 200 fountains across the Kansas City Metro area. Kansas City has recently seen an influx in new industry, bringing more and more people to this historic city. Amongst its historic downtown you will also find a mix of contemporary living, a happening arts scene, a lively nightlife, and delicious barbecue. Kansas City's Westport District

Notable Attractions in Kansas City

There’s plenty to see in KCMO, but you won’t want to miss the attractions below.

, known as “The Original Kansas City”, is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Kansas City, MO. Today, Westport is known for its blend of trendy boutiques, tasty eateries, and nighttime hotspots. 

The Crossroads Art District is known for its art galleries and warehouses. You will find coffee bars, bars, and BBQ joints lining the area as well as shops offering handcrafted jewelry, fashion, and quirky trinkets. First Fridays, happening the first Friday of every month, brings big crowds with art shows and food trucks.

KC Live at the Power and Light District

Home to the Sprint Center, the buzzing Kansas City Power and Light District (P&L) draws big crowds for sporting events and concerts, cocktail bars, steakhouses, clubs, live music, and chic boutiques. The Power and Light District is where to head for a lively night out or a fun afternoon.

Loose Park is the third largest park in Kansas City. The beautiful Loose Park is a great place for a picnic or tennis game. Loose Park is also home to a lake, Civil War markers, a lush rose garden, and more. 

The Liberty Memorial & National WWI Museum is America’s official museum for World War I. The museum is home to exhibitions and educational programs that engage the public and preserve World War I history.

During the Halloween season, you’ll want to make sure to check out The Beast Haunted House. Known for being one of the scariest haunted houses in the United States since 1991, The Beast offers an open-format experience that allows guests to become part of the action.

The Western Auto Building, also known as the Coca-Cola building or the Candler Building, has been a beacon in Kansas City since 1914. Formerly a commercial building full of offices, the building has since been converted into residences.

The Western Auto Building features a multi-story sign that was refurbished and relit in 2018. The 12-story building, which can be seen from numerous parts of the City including the Crossroads and Interstate 35, was deemed a historical landmark in 1988.

Arts & Entertainment in KCMO

KCMO is known for its happening arts scene. Below you will find some of our favorite places to take in art and entertainment in the city.

The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art is a great place to spend an afternoon with the whole family. The museum offers free admission to all and is home to a variety of exhibitions ranging from ancient pieces to contemporary works of art.

Union Station, built in 1914 is a beautiful example of historic Missouri architecture. This awe-inspiring building sat vacant for almost two decades before being renovated and reopened to the public. The Grand Hall features 95-foot ceilings, three giant chandeliers, and a large clock hanging from the central arch. You can still catch the train to many destinations across the United States as well as host events, meetings, weddings, parties, and more.

Arrowhead Stadium - Home of the Kansas City Chiefs

The Coterie Theatre, located in the Crown Center, is a nationally renowned performing arts center that hosts professional classical and contemporary theater.

Since opening in 2007, the Sprint Center has been Kansas City’s home for live entertainment and sporting events. Located on the east side of the Power and Light District, the Sprint Center host over 100 events annually.

Kauffman Stadium, also referred to as “the K” is the baseball park home to the Kansas City Royals.

Home to the Kansas City Chiefs, Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most iconic football stadiums in the United States and holds the record for loudest crowd roar. Not only does the stadium host football games, but there are also several event spaces, a variety of events such as concerts, and a regional art collection.

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts

Located in downtown KCMO, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts hosts a variety of entertainment for the public. Home to the Kansas City Ballet, Kansas City Symphony, and Lyric Opera, there is something for everyone to enjoy. In addition to hosting performances by their resident organizations, they also host a variety of shows from outside entertainers such as musicians.

The Arabia Steamboat Museum is a history museum in Kansas City that is home to the salvaged Arabia Steamboat that sank in the Missouri River in 1856. Numerous artifacts, which laid at the bottom of the Missouri River from September 5, 1856 to 1988, are on display for all visitors to enjoy.

Young or old, there is something to be discovered at the Arabia Steamboat Museum.

The Patriot Roller Coaster at Worlds of Fun

Worlds of Fun is an amusement park that opened its doors in 1973. Worlds of Fun is themed after the Jules Verne book, Around the World in 80 Days. Divided into 5 distinct areas inspired by regions like Scandinavia and Asia you will find dining, attractions, and more themed to fit with their region. Worlds of Fun is a great way to spend the day with the whole family. 

 Adjacent to Worlds of Fun, Oceans of Fun is a tropical themed waterpark. When it opened in 1982 Oceans of Fun  was the World’s largest waterpark. Oceans of Fun is a great place to cool off and have some fun on a hot summer’s day.

Founded in 1909, the Kansas City Zoo is the largest zoo in the region and brings visitors up-close-and-personal with more than 1,700 animals from around the world. The Kansas City Zoo is passionate about animal conservation and hosts a variety of educational seminars about how we can help keep the World’s animals healthy and happy.

Visit a variety of the best breweries in Kansas City on a KC Beer Tour. Not only is it a great way to see the city but it’s also the best way to try a wide variety of beers brewed in Kansas City and sample new beers as they are brewed. Guided by knowledgeable tour guides, KC Beer Tours are great for those from out of town as well as those living in Kansas City.

Kansas City Street Car

Kansas City’s public streetcar system is known as KC Streetcar. The free-to-ride KC Streetcar is a great way to get around the city without having to deal with parking. Not only is the Streetcar a practical way to get through the heart of Kansas City, but they also offer educational trips such as “Storytelling on the Streetcar Line”.

The City Market, located in Kansas City’s River Market neighborhood, has been one of the largest public farmers’ markets in the Midwest since its inception in 1957. Open year-round, the City Market is where you will find specialty foods, fresh meats, a variety of restaurants, florists, and much more.
